The vertical rolling mill achieves the purpose of adjusting the width of the steel plate by giving a large amount of side pressure to the steel plate. The temperature of the billet in contact with the roll is also higher. Therefore, the roll must have good thermal crack resistance, high hardness and mold resistance. Alloy cast steel or forged steel rolls with good strength and toughness should be used.

Structural characteristics of alloy cast steel rolls: alloy cast steel rolls are cast steel rolls with an alloy content greater than 0.8%. Typical materials are: 60CrMnMo, 65CrNiMo, 70Mn2Mo, 75CrMo, 75NiMo, etc. The basic structure of alloy cast steel rolls is mainly of pearlite type, containing a small amount of carbides, and the hardness ranges from HS 35 to 50. Because the matrix contains a small amount of secondary carbides, the wear resistance is greatly improved compared with carbon steel rolls. The performance characteristics of alloy cast steel rolls are high strength, good toughness, good bite resistance, thermal crack resistance and impact resistance.
